PETA’s annual theater festival returns with a mix of original works that highlight diverse forms of performance and theater. The lineup includes a restaging of Melvin Lee’s “Kumprontasyon,” a series of three one-act plays that revolve around imagined “confrontations” or conversations between key figures in history and politics, from Feb. 6 to 9; “Twin Bill” featuring “Kislap at Fuego” and “Children of the Algo,” two original one-act plays from last year’s festival, revisited on Feb. 14 and 15; a special improv show with Silly People’s Improv Theater or SPIT on Feb. 16; and eight new one-act plays to be staged from Feb. 7 to 16.
The new plays include “The Little Girl in a Box” which talks about self-discovery and a little girl’s search for home; “Failed Puppeteer” and “Noche Buena” which both touch on Filipino family values through generations and times of crisis; “Monit-oh! Monit-ah!” and “[email protected]” exploring how traditional and modern dilemmas test our Filipino values; and “Ang Kuwento ni Babae,” “Taya! Sabay Yakap,” and “At Nagkatawang Tao ang Verbo” touching on themes of gender and faith.

At the core of CAST’s theater practice are the staged readings, which provide actors an avenue to explore more works beyond commercial musicals. The annual staged readings, as is CAST’s tradition, are not announced in advance; audiences will only find out the title of the play during the show itself. This year’s staged readings are themed “Theoria Omnium” or a theory of everything—as all plays chosen revolve around scientific drama. The last play in the run happens on Feb. 2, and will star Dolly De Leon, Roselyn Perez, and Naths Everett.

The most Valentines-y of this list (and opening after Valentine’s weekend) is a rerun of Repertory Philippines’ “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” A more modern take on the ’90s musical, it takes its audience through various vignettes about the ups and downs of dating, love, romance, marriage, and even finding love in old age.
